Homeowners Insurance Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Question: How much homeowner’s insurance is enough, and what kinds of coverage should I have?

“Enough” means a sufficient amount to rebuild your home. Replacement costs to rebuild represent the construction costs. If you have a custom built home with specialty features, it is likely that you will need more than a standard policy’s replacement value. It is a good idea to enumerate the special features of your home, and evaluate your personal belongings before you meet with our representative so they can inform you about your options for covering your belongings and your home. Personal Liability protection is also suggested for most homeowners. A consultation with our insurance specialists will determine your personal liability coverage needs.

Question: How will I know if my insurance carrier chooses not to renew my policy?

Under Massachusetts law, an insurer is NOT required to renew your policy. If they choose not to renew your policy, they must notify you within 45 days prior to the policy’s expiration date. They may do this by first class mail, and do not have to use other methods of notification, such as certified mail.

Question: I have been informed that my insurance carrier will not renew my homeowner’s policy. What now?

Check with your agent to see if they have other carriers who are willing to insure your home. You will not be left without insurance in Massachusetts.
